How do you avoid double-taxation on income when you establish corporation in Texas? When you establish your business as a corporation in Texas (no state income tax, but there is a franchise tax), what is the best way to distribute earnings to pay the lowest amount of taxes and avoid double-taxation? Should I pay myself a salary, or just pay myself in dividends? I'm not incorporated yet, so I still have the option to form as a LLC.
Who knows the difference between progressive taxation and legitimate taxation? I have noticed that on a lot of questions about taxes answerers confuse taxation for legitimate (constitutionally enumerated) purposes such as building and maintainging roads and the military with taxation for progressive purposes (unconstitutional social welfare programs). There is a difference and I am wondering how many people understand that difference. Social Welfare Programs are all programs which redistribute wealth or provide charity with taxpayer money. This includes all of what most people consider welfare programs, Education Funding, Social Security, Grants to businesses or individuals except as part of a legitimate work contract, etc.
How does taxation differ from common theft? Bias/agenda alert: I think that they are much the same. My intention is to influence people reading this question to critically consider the question and the implications of its answers. I hope that others who already agree with my point of view to express their opinions but also expect and welcome people critical of my view. To anticipate the dissenting views: 1. Taxation pays for necessary services that can not be provided by the market. I reject this notion. If a service is necessary and important, methods can be found to exert influence on people to pay for it without resorting to the threat of violence. 2. Voluntary markets introduce free-rider problems. How many people free-ride off of welfare programs for the poor and subsidies for the rich? 3. Society has legitimized taxation. If you don't like it, then leave. Gaining the consent of many people does not change the nature of a crime. If enough people consent, I can legally rob you! x2000: Yes, you would have to pay for the services you named. But why must money be stolen in order to pay for these necessary services? A discussion of how voluntary payment systems might function is outside of the question I posed. However, I will just say that by allowing payment collected by threat of violence opens you up to the money so collected not being used for its stated purpose. I think that national defense (sic) is a perfect example. Perdendosi: All that you've proven is that mob-rule works. You have done nothing to prove that the nature of taxation is different from theft. If I refuse to pay my tax, people with guns will show up to force me to pay, imprison me or kill me. The only difference with a common thief is that he is up-front. He doesn't try to legitimize his actions. He doesn't go to my neighbors and ask them how much he should take from me or even to offer to share his plunder with my neighbors. That I can object with a vote does not stop the taxman from showing up with guns. Collective representation is a sham. The objections in your final paragraph are no more than socialist concepts though I'm sure you would not suggest that description yourself. Businesses and other organizations would have every incentive to pay for road construction and maintenance. You just don't have the imagination to conceive how to maintain the road in front of your home without robbing me. MrNiceGuy: Yes, there are social costs to pay to maintain society. I think that we DO have to pay them. It is interesting that you think that we need a gang of goons to collect protection money (taxes) to take care of the poor. I do have empathy for the meek. I voluntarily donate about 15% of my income to charitable causes. I plan later this week to donate some of my time to help clean up a community ravaged by a recent flood. Your empathy consists of asking people to rob me to give to the poor. I'm sure that your surprised when your thugs use very little of the money for its stated purpose. I bet you're appalled at all of the war that is fought with your stolen money. Why would anyone be surprised that thugs and thieves would be less than honest? Perdendosi: First, theft is violence aginst my property. But then, supposing that I do not voluntarily give up my property, the government will send men to kidnap (incarcerate) me if they can. If they are unable to do so, there is a real threat that they might kill me. This is because I would not part with my property. I continue to challenge you. How is this different than common theft? x2000: The mechanism of voluntary payment systems is outside of the scope of the current question simply because it is admittedly complex. If you mean that it is a related subject, you are right. If I am unable to demonstrate that voluntary payment systems could not work, then we are left only with involuntary ones. For the present question, I am focusing on the nature of taxation. Paying for defense with taxation amounts to the government violating my property in order to defend me. What if I want someone to defend me from having my property violated by the government? Your last sentence is a statement of the free-rider problem. The free-rider problem will exist as long as people desire more benefits for less effort. I continue to ask you to consider the people who free-ride off of the current tax system. I argue that they benefit themselves and (in the case of national defense) do more harm than good with the money they take from me. Perdendosi: Who would build a fire department? I work as an actuary for an insurance company. I can tell you that we would build a fire department. In exchange for fire protection, we would collect premiums to pay for the service. The premium levels would be based upon how many homes in a neighborhood had insurance with us or with another company that agreed to reimburse us in case their insured home catches fire. In this way, you would have incentive to influence your neighbors to have insurance or perhaps to ask a home-owners association to pay for the coverage. If an uninsured home caught fire, we would put it out so as to avoid damage to insured homes. We would price this in the same way we price uninsured motorist insurance for auto insurance. You lacked imagination how an entrepeneur (me) would handle this situation. In how many other ways do you lack imagination?
What are the differences in taxation of citizens between USA, Italy, & UK? Can someone from UK & Italy explain the taxation system in your countries? Do you get to keep most of your paychecks? Can anyone give me information on double taxation agreements between France and the UK? I work at a University and we have some visiting researchers coming over for 4 x two weekly periods to engage in research. They will be being paid their salary by the company in France but I wanted to know whether we should tax them as according to my interpretation of Article 21 of the double taxation agreement, they should not pay tax in the UK. I would appreciate any guidance on this as I am not sure if we are following the correct procedure. Thanks in advance.

Why is the taxation done in brackets in this country? I don't understand the income taxation system, which by its implications, punish the ambitious and hardworking who are successful and wealthy to promote the welfare of the less successful, whichever the cause may be, who get taxed less. Consider the fact that the amount of the money taxed increases with the increasing income, why heighten the percentage for the higher brackets to limit the freedom of financial pursuits, one of the founding bases of liberty? What is the fundamental idea and benefits behind this bracket taxation system?
Why did you introduce a major change to our taxation system from sales tax to GST without a referendum? I do know at the time you said because you had been elected you had a mandate from the people .......... but to do what you want? If any responsible leader of any country were to dramatically change that taxation system, then don't you agree that the change ought to be ratified by the people's vote on that very critical change. Or is it a dictitorial decision that because "I am your leader then I will do what ever I want because the majority (in this case not) elected me". I found and still find that decision reprehensible Mr. Howard. I trust that you will have a peaceful retirement from having to make decisions and overide the needs of the Australian people in spite of their well-being and best interests. We have paid far too much and far too well for your dotage.
How did taxation office know where I was? I am from Australia and went to New Zealand for a business trip for 4 days. On the 1st night I was staying there I recieved a call from the Australian taxation office because I was owing some import tax on some goods from China. I do not know how they knew I was staying at a motel in New Zealand. There is no application anywhere to say I was staying at that motel. In fact that motel was not in writing anywhere other than a personal print-out for my own reference. Any ideas, I am stumped?

What taxation should be expected on insurance for a busines fire? My mom lost her business of 20+ years to a fire this week. Now with no way to make income any time soon i'm worried about how the insurance money will last her. I'm worried that the IRS will tax it and she'll end up with nothing to live off of after being taxed and paying business debts. Is her insurance money going to be hit hard with taxes?
Does any one know how the taxation on winning a "dream home" in a charity raffle is paid? My city is currently selling rafle tickets for $100 to win a $500K dream home. The house is being donated by the builder, and all the ticket money is going to charity. I was just wondering how the prize tax on such a thing is handled. Is the winner suposed to pay income tax on the $500K value of the home? The charity specifically states that the ticket price is not a tax deductable charity contribute. Why exactly I don't know.

Is there such a thing as double taxation when purchasing a vehicle? I am from Washington state and I am planning on buying my next vehicle in Colorado to save some money on tax. How much taxation are you willing to tolerate? Some European countries have free college tuition and health care, but pay upwards of 60 to 70 percent income tax. Are Americans ready for that? Ludwig, try answering the question, instead of channeling Keith Olbermann.
Is a move of dollars between two funds subject to capital gains taxation? I received a form 1099-B from my fund manager that described the movement as an "EXCHANGE", however, there was a subsequent movement of the same funds to a different fund that did not appear on the 1099-B. Since these were truly exchanges rather than distributions, are they taxable? All of these funds are within the same account, and the account is not an IRA.
What are the US taxation rates for captial gains from foreign investments? I am a US Permanent Resident. I own approximately 12% of a UK based partnership which owns 6 overseas offices. I have been an equity partner for 3 years. The partnership is valued between £8,000,000 and £10,000,000. Should we sell the company, what US captial gains tax liability might I have? I can't seem to get a straight answer on this from my accountant.
What ever happened to No taxation without representation? As a tax payer do you really agree with how the government is spending your money these days, Congress does seem to event have a handle on where the money goes. The US is paying 16% of multinational corporate expansion (Does not benifit the US worker or consumer very much) What are your thoughts? Elections are being won with election contribution dollars and not by the good sense of individual voters and I do vote every election it is the masses that watch TV all day that really decide. http://www.dcvote.org/images/dclicenseplate.jpg
Taxation from repaid loans to a Subchapter S corporation? I'm looking over some accounts for an S Corp. The way the company is set up right now, the founders have put their money into the company, but they're treating it like a long-term loan; keeping track of the money invested and the interest it's earning, with the intent of repaying those loans as the business becomes profitable. However, we're unclear on the consequences of these paybacks. Is an individual responsible for income tax on these funds? The company president is of the opinion that it shouldn't, since the profits and losses of an S Corp flow directly to the shareholders, so he's essentially just transferring money from himself to himself. But none of us are tax experts. Any advice on how we can best withdraw money from this company as it becomes successful? If it's important, we're incorporated in New York.
