If my permanent residence is VA, but I worked in NJ over the summer, how do state taxes work? I'm a part-time student who's permanent residence is in VA. My wife and permanent residence remained VA while I worked/lived in NJ over the summer. They obviously withheld NJ income taxes, however, I am entitled to get those back, correct? How does taxation work? So which is it? Also, NJ/VA aren't reciprocal states I don't think, so I don't think your info about a credit is correct.
Question about a financial aid refund and a NEW JERSEY state return? I used TurboTax (trademark) to file my tax return federally this year. I attended college and received a partial refund from an overabundance of Pell Grant money. However, on my state return, it says I need the "grantor name" and the "ID number" when I'm on Turbotax. I don't know what either of these are or where to find them. Scouring NJ taxation website was of no avail. Thoughts? Please?
Where to buy house if working in Philadelphia? How's South Jersey from taxation point of view? Is this correct? House in Philly Philly Wage 3.5 + PA State 3% + 5000K annual property tax House in South Jersey NJ State 6.5% - Philly Wage 3.5 + 9000K annual property tax If this is true of course living in Bucks County (council rock, cenral bucks school dist) makes much more sense. Any thought?
I moved to Philadelphia, working for a consultant company based on New Jersey. Which is the % of Taxation that I have to Pay? Federal Taxes ? NJ Taxes ? PA Taxes ? Philadelphia Taxes ? How can I reduce my taxation considering that I am living in Philadelphia but my company is in NJ. Thank you

If I buy a currently leased car and later sell it to my son, will we get nailed for double sales tax? I am considering buying a leased car at the residual value, keeping it for 6-12 months, and then selling it to my son. I realize I will be responsible for the sales tax when I purchase it (since I've already only paid sales tax on the depreciation). However, when I sell it to my son, will he then also be responsible for sales tax? Seems to me the state already collected the tax on the full value of the car when I bought it. Isn't this double taxation. BTW, I live in NJ.
i take over the payments of my friend's car i need to pay taxes over the lien? she can't pay so she give it to me and i transfer to my name with the toyota financial and i recive a letter from nj taxation i have to fill it out and send it back with some information
Working in NY,Living in NY or NJ? I have just moved to the US.I will be working in NY. I have heard many senarios about the taxation. Which state will tax me less so I get more on my pay check. And which is less of a hassle when I am to file a return
Savings account question - taxation across state borders? If all my income is coming from Connecticut, but I have a legacy savings/checking account in NJ, what can NJ tax? Just the accounts residing in NJ, or all my income in CT? I ask because once I move it will have an impact on me if I still have to pay the full scope of NJ income taxes on my overall income, rather than just the interest income. To clarfy: I plan to live in CT and remove everything from NJ but the checking/savings accounts from one bank. The question is, can NJ tax this or if I declare all interest income in CT and pay taxes there, do I have to file in NJ as well and get taxed? And if so, how much can NJ tax? Can they try to tax the rest of my income that is all coming from CT? I doubt that they can do that, but just asking.
Taxation and cost of living in Delaware? I understand that DE has no sales tax, but does sales tax apply to services (Internet, landlines phone services, cell phones, insurance premiums, cable TV....) and utilities as well? What about Real Estate Property Tax? It seems like the State of DE does not levy Real Estate Property Tax, but counties in DE do which doesn't make it that much different than DE's surrounding states.... Overall, what is the cost of living like for an average Joe compared to the surrounding States (NJ, MD, PA)? I would hope DE is least taxed and most affordable in mid-atlantic area. Your opinions please?

tax defficiency and green card? I am an US non-resident, who has a tax defficiency for 2005 with the NJ divison of taxation. They withheld my 2006 tax return, but I still owe them $80-$90. I also have a federal debt connected with that deficiency, but the IRS did not offcet that amount from my 2006 federal tax return. The reason for the defficiency, as the NJ div. of tax. told me, is that they have not recognized the payroll stubs as sufficient evidence for me to have paid taxes. My employers did not sent me W2 forms and I used the payroll stubs instead. In May 2007, I received a notification letter that I have won from the 2008DV green vard lottery. I have a concern that this defficiency could be an obstacle for me to obtain a green card. On the other hand one of the conditions under which a GC could be rejected is committed crimes of moral turpitude. As long as the NJ div. of tax. told me, the reason for the deficiency is because they have not seen the documentation they want. For this reason I think that this can not be considered as some kind of a fraud and therefore a crime. A fraud would be if I claim a higher tax return than I deserve and they pay me the higher amount. I was thinking of paying those $80-$90 and clearing the debt off, but I can not get in tough with them – when I call their phone line is constantly busy. For this reason I don’t know how I can pay them. I would be glad if some of you, who are knowledgeable on the topic of state taxes to give me some advice – could it be an obstacle for a green card, how I can pay them or clear this thing off? Federal debt sounds serious to me though, what consequences could it bring to me?

Why do they charge sales tax for my soup in New Jersey? Isn't food supposed to be exempt? I buy my lunch soup in grocery store in Caldwell, NJ sometimes and the posted price is $2.99 for a medium bowl. According to NJ Sales Tax manual, page 5 which is here: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/pdf/pubs/sales/su4.pdf most food is exempt from sales tax. Why then are they charging me $3.20 for the soup? Someone please help me understand. Thank you. Thanks for the response. Soup though is a prepared food, falls under the NJ's defintion of food. and is bought in a grocery store as opposed to a restaurant. This is from the tax manual: "Food and food ingredients (exempt) means substances, whether in liquid, concentrated, solid, frozen, dried, or dehydrated form, that are sold for ingestion or chewing by humans and are consumed for their taste or nutritional value. This term does not include tobacco, alcoholic beverages, candy, or soft drinks." NJ should stay outta my pocket.
I bought my home 1 year ago, and I am selling it for $14k more than what I paid. Does capital gains tax apply? My fiance and I bought our condo last year (May 1, 2007) for $156,000. We have put about $10k into it, and we are looking to re-sell it for $169,900 it and buy a new home. However, we have heard about capital gains and how it may effect us. We're not sure about what exactly it is, or if it even applies to us. If anyone knows anything about NJ capital gains taxation, please let me know. We're trying not to get screwed in the end. Honest answers greatly appreciated. Thank you!
If all the politicians are suddenly "Shocked and Outraged" at AIG for the bonuses, shouldn't they return? their campaign contributions? This isn't about Party, it's about a Red Herring that is being fed to the gullible people dumb enough to be distracted by it. Fact: The bonuses are a CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION. Fact: If we screw with the bonuses either through taxation or legislation it opens up a fun new power for the Government to abuse. Fact: These bonuses are paid for work PERFORMED as in the employee did their part and now these mental midgets in Washington want them to renig on the promise made, when these guys could have accepted other offers if they knew this was coming. However, the real news is that AIG sent TWENTY-BILLION OF OUR TAX DOLLARS TO OVERSEAS BANKS!!!! Any of the people running around screaming about the $165 million in bonuses...IS TRYING TO DISTRACT YOU!!! But regardless...if these politicians who are now suddenly "Shocked and Outraged" I would like to see them return the money AIG has donated to them!!! Bringing back 250 pounds of green coffee beans from Dominican Republic in my luggage. Is this legal? I want to bring back about 250 pounds of cleaned green coffee beans from the Dominican Republic, through Puerto Plata airport going to Newark, NJ. If customs will allow me to bring this back, how much will the traiff/duty taxation price be approx? I will put about 50 pounds of the beans in my check in bag, and the rest in my checked in luggage bags to minimize weight difficulties. Let me know the best way ti export a few hundred pounds of coffee beans whether it be through airport, customs brokerer or Fed ex. Thanks in advance!
Today I got a letter from "Property Tax Assessment Service."? The letter states, "Be advised the State of New Jersey gives recent home buyer the opportunity to have property taxes/assessments reviewed and corrected according to chapter 123, Laws of 1973, Title 54, Laws of Taxation. Report issued will reduce property taxes allowed by municipality if incorrect. Just wondering if anyone else in NJ got this letter? I know this a scam but I want to ask just to see who else got this. I feel it is a scam because on top of the letter it states that "Property tax assessment server incorporated is a private corporation having no government agency affiliation." So I am curious, where they got my name. Thanks.
To get a CPA license, can any accounting courses fall into the "other business courses" criteria? To be licensed as a CPA in NJ, the educational requirements state "baccalaureate degree with at least 30 semester hours in accounting and least 24 semester hours in other business courses other than accounting. The conservation way I figure it, I have 30 hours in graduate accounting courses, 6 in undergrad accounting courses, and 6 in business courses. My question is, will I likely have any luck getting the board to accept some of the "borderline" accounting courses as business so I can have 30 in accounting and 12 in business? Some potentials are: Auditing Information Systems Law Ethics and PRofessional Accounting Practice Tax Law Research Taxation of Corporations/Partnerships Those did fall in the accounting school, but I wanted to know if the state CPA boards are usually open to scenarios like this. To clarify, I've already taken those classes, and sinec graduated with my Masters. The State (NJ) Board of Accountancy would be determinining whether or not they are acceptable "business courses other than accounting."
How can an Englishman in New York manage his taxes....? I recently married my US partner and now we are looking to relocate from Europe to the US. We are likely to be located in NJ and I will get a spousal visa which we're in the middle of applying for. The problem I have is that I don't work for a living, but I am a full time FX trader and most of my gains are made offshore. I travel a lot as so I am not in the UK long enough to be liable for taxation, but I understand the IRS tax worldwide gains unlike the UK. We'll still be travelling, but as the US is so big I doubt I'll be out of the union for more than 6 months per tax year. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I should do before I start filing with the IRS. At the moment I have plenty of W8-BEN's completed, but they only last 3 years and become invalid once I get my visa and we're living in the US. My wife already files separately and that will not change unless there is a tax benefit that I am missing. I know I can bring capital onshore when we relocate, but is there a time limit for when that can happen? If I leave my capital offshore accumulating in value and bring bits on from time to time will I have to declare it? thanks
What certificate/degree is required to teach in different clss levels,colleges/universities? I have a B com and CA-inter from India.According to my transcript evaluation my courses are equivalent to US 4 year undergraduate degree.I would like to teach.I was thinking of teaching elementary school. But don't know if I need to get a certificate or a masters in education?Since my undergraduate subjects were accounts ,auditing, business etc I might need to do some courses to be eligible to do the said certificate/degree I guess-am I right? If I want to avoid taking extra courses I guess I will have to teach High school or college etc.But for that what certificates or Master Degree might I have to take?I don't like Accounting/Taxation(I am good at theory papers not so with mathematical papers).I am good at Auditing,Marketing and Business-especially Auditing-I have very high score in this paper.Since I am really good with theory papers I prefer teaching such papers.I would love to do a Master Degree and then go on for PhD in any such theory based subjects and teach them too. My question is what subject/course/certificate/Master degree I need to learn to teach in high school or college? Is a PhD or Master degree better to teach high school etc? Which colleges in NJ offer courses at affordable rates(or have financial aides) in such courses/certificates/master degrees? To do PhD do I need a Masters or just take some etc courses(I don't mind taking few etc courses to be eligible to do a PhD).Can I do that part time(doesn't matter if it takes a long time-I have 2 small kids to take care of and no job) and still do Graduate assistant-ship along with it?Are all students eligible for graduate assistant-ship? I have heard high school students are difficult to handle-Is this true? Please help ,advice me.Thanks in advance.
Is this medical marijuana craze just a first step to legalized pot? I just visited California a few months ago (I'm from NJ). I was astounded by the number of ads in local rags and smaller newspapers by doctors specializing in medical marijuana prescriptions. People I visited in Cal also confirmed that it is very very easy to get a prescription for it. They fill prescriptions for pain, headaches, glaucoma, Chemo patients, alzheimers, parkinsons. Some very serious diseases along with some very borderline diseases. Several other states have laws like Cal. If this trend continues, the feds will need to decriminalize it soon with the next steps being flat out legalization and regulation/taxation. Note that I am just stating the reality of the situation. I'm many years past my pot smoking days. Any other prospectives on what is happening?
